How to Use XBox 360 (Wireless) Controller for Windows on a Mac

While games designed for the computer usually use keyboard and mouse input, sometimes it can be beneficial to have a console style game pad or controller. One great option for a controller for PCs is the XBox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows. While Windows may have the drivers necessary to use the controller built-in (since Microsoft makes both), other operating systems may not. If you’ve ever wanted to use the controller (or the wired version) with your Mac, this is how you can do it.

XBox 360 Controller Driver for Mac

Colin Munro over at TattieBogle.net has created an XBox 360 Controller Driver for Mac OS X. Although the latest version, 0.12, was released in February, 2013, I’ve tested it with the XBox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows on the latest release of OS X Mavericks (10.9) and it works well.

To configure it, simply download and install the driver, which may require a restart. Afterward, open up the new preference pane and plug in your controller or receiver (and turn the controller on, if wireless). The device should be detected automatically, and you can test the keys by pressing them and seeing the on-screen response.

This should enable you to configure the controller in games or applications that support one.
