NVIDIA SHIELD TV Is Basically Silent

I recently obtained an NVIDIA SHIELD TV, which is one of the best Android TV boxes available today. I was originally hesitant to purchase it as it has active cooling with a fan. However, after hearing some reports that the unit is very quiet, I decided to give it a try. The version I got is the 16 GB one with flash storage, not the higher capacity SHIELD PRO, which comes with a 500 GB hard drive. I wanted to avoid spinning hard drive noises, which would probably be audible with the SHIELD PRO.

I am pleased to report that even though there is a fan, the SHIELD TV appears to be inaudible. I have yet to put it through its paces with heavy gaming, but it stays silent while watching and streaming video. For now, I can recommend the NVIDIA SHIELD TV (at least the 16 GB version) as a powerful yet silent Android TV solution. If anything changes, I will update this post.

Do you have a SHIELD TV? Is it silent? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I’ve got the same 16gig 2017 model and, while I’ve never heard much of a fan noise, I do hear random electrical clicks/crackles when I put my ear up against the houseing. Almost likes like an old analog electicic relay (but much quieter).

Also when the device powers up after being disconnected from power, there’s a coil whine. Until things boot up. Then the sound described above stars.
